Aida Overton Walker was a trailblazer in entertainment, breaking down racial and gender barriers in the early 20th century. As a celebrated vaudeville performer, singer, and actress, she became a star in a field dominated by white artists. Known as the "Queen of the Cakewalk," Walker not only wowed audiences with her incredible talent but also used her platform to challenge racial stereotypes and promote Black culture.

In 1905 she wrote“Our Stage work is grand and our lives can be made beautiful.  Just think; night after night we entertain people and make them laugh and be happy and forget all the troubles and sorrows with which they are burdened throughout the day. I am sure it is a pleasure to others as well as to receive pleasure ourselves.”

Tracey Hope-Ross is a self-taught, middle-aged artist working from her cozy New England studio—usually after the kids and cats are tucked in for the night. Her figurative abstract paintings begin with vintage black-and-white photographs of women, layered with oil and acrylic paint to create soulful, whimsical portraits infused with memory, nature, and quiet magic.

Tracey’s work explores the deep-rooted connection between women, the natural world, and the generational wisdom passed down through time. Each piece honors the “Mother Tree” within us all—the protector, the nurturer, the keeper of stories—and invites viewers to lose themselves in a world where grace and gravity, vulnerability and joy coexist.

Inspired by nature scientists, Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keeffe, and the freedom of modern collage, Tracey creates scenes that feel emotionally resonant and spiritually light. She believes art reflects our soul’s intentions and the energy we offer the world. Her work is an offering—a place to pause, to feel, and maybe even to find a little clarity in the chaos.
